A heritage or cultural building carries a story that long precedes the brief — and good design protects that story rather than erasing it. Architects Afrique designs heritage restorations and new cultural buildings in Cape Coast and across Ghana, surveying what exists, respecting the original fabric and identity, and rooting new work in a confident African architectural language. A registered, process-led practice since 1984. Book a design consultation: +233 23 063 0038.

Why Heritage & Cultural Clients Design With Architects Afrique

Cape Coast holds some of West Africa’s most significant historic fabric, and heritage and cultural commissions there — restorations, extensions, museums, cultural centres, and civic spaces — demand a designer who reads the existing building before drawing a line on it. Architects Afrique approaches each commission by surveying what is there, understanding its character, and designing interventions that conserve rather than overwrite. Our defined process — survey, concept, developed design, permit drawings, construction documentation — gives trustees, custodians, and cultural bodies a clear view of what they are approving at every stage.

We design with an African identity that is native to the place, not borrowed — work that lets a heritage site or a new cultural building read as authentic, dignified, and rooted in its own context.

What Heritage & Cultural Architecture Demands

Conservation & Original Fabric

Restoration begins with understanding — a survey of what exists, its construction, and its condition. We design interventions that respect the original fabric, repair sympathetically, and distinguish new work from old with honesty rather than imitation, so the building’s history stays legible.

Cultural Identity & Meaning

Cultural buildings carry meaning beyond function — they represent a community, a history, or a nation. We design that meaning into form, material, and space, drawing on an African architectural language so the building expresses identity rather than importing a foreign style.

Sensitive Integration

New extensions, visitor facilities, and cultural buildings often sit beside or within significant settings. We design them to integrate — in scale, material, and approach — so the new and the historic read as one considered whole, coordinated with the relevant heritage and planning bodies.

Our Heritage & Cultural Design Scope

We take heritage and cultural commissions from survey to a built result — design only, so you take the drawings to your own contractor, or a design-build commission where design and construction sit under one accountable team.

Consultation & Portfolio

We begin with a design consultation — the building or site, its history, the brief, and what the budget can realistically deliver. Diaspora custodians and cultural bodies do this by video call. We then share relevant portfolio work so you can see how we have handled comparable heritage and cultural projects before you commit. An architect’s fee is agreed up front, normally as a percentage of construction cost (the GIA publishes a fee scale as guidance) or a staged design fee — separate from the cost of the building itself, which comes from a Bill of Quantities once the design is set. No guessed per-square-metre numbers.

Heritage & Cultural Architecture Across Cape Coast & Beyond

We design heritage and cultural buildings across Cape Coast and the Central Region, plus Cantonments, Airport City, Ridge, and East Legon in Greater Accra — and Kumasi, Takoradi, and Lomé, Togo. Diaspora and institutional clients design and build with us remotely, with full progress reporting. Book a design consultation: +233 23 063 0038.
